Sean Rockey has worked as a professor of esthetics, a spa educator, and an esthetics coach for nearly 20 years. He has helped create treatments and design spa menus for many top resorts and luxury destinations, including Fontainebleau, The Breakers, Four Season's Kuda Huraa, Four Season's Bora Bora, Four Season's Lanai, Goldeneye, Strawberry Hill, Anassa, and Almyra.
Sean grew up on the shores of Lake Erie, where he cultivated a deep respect for the healing power of nature. After his early career as an actor and dancer, a knee injury led him to seek other paths, and he found his way back to nature and healing. He apprenticed at the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine and completed a course in Ayurveda. As a gardener and educator at the Kalani Honua eco-resort in Hawaii, Sean learned to identify and harvest plants and began making botanical body treatments. During this time, Sean also studied with local healing practitioners, learning Watsu, Hawaiian Water massage, Hoʻoponopono healing, and Lomi Lomi massage.
Bringing together his studies of plants, herbalism, and healing modalities, Sean obtained his first esthetics license in 2002 from Zenzi’s Cosmetology Training Center in San Francisco, and shortly thereafter, returned to Zenzi’s as an instructor. For the next several years, Sean both offered treatments to clients and instructed new estheticians, all while continuing his education. He completed postgraduate courses with Eva Fredericks, California’s first esthetician, and her daughter, Lori Nestore. He also studied acupressure and shiatsu at the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley. In addition, he completed courses in Acutonics, sound healing, reiki, and polarity therapy.
Throughout his career, he has worked at a variety of spas, including Aveda, Sense Spa at the Rosewood Hotel in Palo Alto, and SenSpa in San Francisco. After befriending Jenefer Palmer, creator of the OSEA line of marine-based beauty products, Sean became a global educator for the brand, instructing spa staff at luxury resorts around the world.
Currently, Sean also helps to preserve the ecosystems of his hometown as a member of the Lakelands Park Commission.
Sean’s work as an esthetician and educator synthesizes the breadth of his experiences and is informed by his knowledge of herbalism, ancient healing traditions, and modern science; by his global perspective; and by his commitment to protecting the planet’s ecosystems. As an herbal esthetician and someone who has always loved to bath in the ocean, I was drawn to work with marine-based skin care products. My passion for the subject eventually landed me a position as the global educator of an all natural seaweed-based line from California. It wasn’t long before my travels took me to my first thalassotherapy center on the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean. It was in Cyprus where I was introduced to the ancient goddess of the sea, Thalassa. Through the ages, her name came to mean "the sea," and in 1865 the French doctor Jacques de la Bonnardièrecoined the term thalassotherapy. Thalassotherapy is inspired by Greek and Roman cultures, who were well aware that life sprung out of the sea and that they could return to her waters to heal and replenish. Bonnardière would send his patients to take in the sea water and fresh sea air. Seaweed soaks, facials, and body treatments help improve skin conditions and alleviate arthritis, rheumatism, joint and muscle pain, nervous tension, circulatory issues, excess body weight, and even addiction. Micronutrients play a vital role in the health of our entire system. All seaweeds are far richer in minerals and micronutrients then land plants. Seaweed is the truest panacea that I am aware of. are designed to enhance your natural beauty and promote overall wellness.
